Well, give a guy an inch... no, just kidding... this week, we have our first Wednesday Weekly Warband written not by me! This is all Wulfgar's work, so enjoy!
PBP MMM everyone’s favorite peanut butter and P…?
No, no not peanut butter, instead, it's a new look on some old phaces, um, sorry, faces... Phadalus, Bolvar, Phadalus.
At first you may snicker or roll your eyes since Phadalus has not seen any high level play to speak of past perhaps a Realm Champs. However, a closer inspection tells you that the character is a mere 6 honor for 3/2/8 stat bar, a respectable 3/1/5 melee attack, and a great 4/3/6 Magic attack with a tremendous crit ability of another 4d magic that can hit guys you don’t even have line of sight to!
Then why Bolvar you ask? Why!? WHY you ask!? Thank you, I shall tell you!
First, he doesn’t die easily to anyone. Period, he's a tough min to kill and that alone makes him frustrating for your opponent. Yet, he still gets the best ABC in the game Bolvar’s Retribution. That card is enough for me to want to run him in most teams. The card offers up to an 8 health swing for 1 tick if rolled perfect. There is nothing else in the game that compares to that.
The only real weakness the team has is how far it has to tick up at times. Let's face it, 3 and 4 tick attacks, for as powerful as they are, slow you down sometimes if not played and timed correctly. Experience will show you when to attack, when to wait, and how to move to improve your down time risk. The ABC’s these characters run will determine how long they can survive. It doesn’t take many attacks to get a character dead from these dudes.
ABC’s for the Shaman are Grounding Totem, Wrath of Air Totem, Healing Wave, and Purge are among my favorites to choose from. The Grounding Totems against those Magic based teams are going to allow you to improve drastically your down time since they will have to shoot that totem before they can hit you.
The Healing Wave is nearly a must since your characters have staying power and that is just amplified by the healing. Purge will help for those teams that are buffing their characters for Speed (Flag runs) or to stop teams like Cairne Bloodhoof from getting so many rerolls trying to punt you from the board and never let you near the flag.
Wrath of Air improves the Healing your team does and the magic damage you are outputting as well. For every successful reroll on a Bolvar’s Ret you will be actually adding a 2 point swing since you heal more and they take more. Also for the Phads to pay for themselves they need a mere 3 kills! With their survivability and damage output this is not hard to accomplish at all!
ABC’s for Bolvar are of course, Bolvar’s Retribution (no brainer), Flash of Light, and Cleanse. The double heal is great since they are cheap to cast and they help the Phads push through the down time with ease. Bolvar rarely ever gets killed in a game where so much healing is going on so he basically pays for himself by keeping the Phads around to kill everyone else without trading blows that often. Not to mention the Consecration Aura that gets that unpreventable damage in at the end of 5/10 that every one twitches at when it happens.
Another aspect that makes this a good viable team to play at World's is that it is 22 Honor. This team MAKES your opponent come to you a lot of games when on a map with no VPs. And that is a game that this team wants to be in! I consider this team a Midrange Team, due to its ability to survive well and dish out decent damage with a moderate Honor cost.
Additionally, when you look at it's ability to go toe to toe with teams like Vashj and Jania's, it will be able to withstand a lot of pressure, both from their good stat bars, armor and resists, as well as the healing they can do. Perhaps a speed only team can get around it, but so far, those teams have very low stats and may be taken out quickly with the power this team can pack. A while back Steelwing himself used to play Phadalus, Savin, Phadalus... this is just one higher as they say.
Let us know what you think. No one seems to have discussed a team like this yet, but it definitely has the options of flag captures or massive kills on the battlefield to take home the Glory of being the WOW Minis World Champ!
